AFSA K-12 Science Fair 2023
The Academy for Sciences & Agriculture had the largest student representation at the 2023 Roland Peterson State FFA Agriscience Fair held at the University of Minnesota on March 9th. Students first participated in a school organized agriscience fair in February which connected students with agricultural professionals serving as judges. Over 40 of the 7th - 12th grade projects advanced to the state level with 34 of those projects placing in the top three in their divisions and categories. These students will be recognized at the State FFA Convention in April.
Science Fair is an engaging component of our curriculum that gives students an opportunity to explore an area of interest and gain valuable skills while doing so. All students, grades K-12, are required each year to complete a science fair project and present it at one of our all school science fair nights. Students in the lower grades work together on a class project while students in upper grades choose their own project category. Project categories include food products and processing, animal systems, plant systems, power, technical and structural systems, environmental systems and social systems. Teachers interact with students throughout the science fair project process. Whether it is help from a math teacher compiling graphing data or guidance from the English department with the final paper.
Science fair is an experience that teaches students proper procedure, gain research techniques, organizational skills, composition & writing skills, public speaking experiences and to be open to the infinite possibilities of science. So what is next for our students who advanced to the top three at the Roland Peterson State Agriscience Fair? Final rankings will be announced at the Minnesota State FFA Convention in April. Those projects who rank the highest will have the opportunity to compete on a national level with other students from around the United States. The final destination is the National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.
